Wix vs a Custom-Built Website: What Actually Matters for a Trades Business

This isn’t a “Wix is bad” post. Plenty of small businesses run perfectly well on it. But if you’re a trades or local service business relying on your website to bring in calls and quote requests, there are a few real differences worth knowing before you decide.

Where Wix and similar builders are genuinely fine

If you mainly need a simple, presentable page — opening hours, contact details, a few photos — a builder plan can get you there quickly and cheaply. For a business that isn’t depending on the site to generate enquiries, that’s often enough.

Where it starts to matter: technical SEO control

Builders handle a lot of the technical side for you, which is convenient, but it also means you’re working within whatever structure they allow. Things like clean URL structure, granular control over page speed, and fine-grained schema markup are harder to control tightly on a builder platform than on a site built from scratch.

Page speed

Builder platforms load a lot of their own framework code before your content even starts rendering. A hand-built site only loads what it actually needs. In practice this tends to mean a faster first load — and speed is both a ranking factor and a factor in whether a visitor sticks around long enough to actually enquire.

Looking like everyone else

Template-based builders are, by definition, templates. It’s common to spot the same layout patterns across dozens of local business sites. That’s not necessarily a dealbreaker, but it does make it harder to stand out from a competitor using the same platform.

The honest tradeoff

None of this is free. A custom-built site costs more upfront than a builder’s free or low-cost plan. The question worth asking isn’t “which is better” in the abstract — it’s whether the difference in enquiries a faster, more distinct, more technically-controlled site brings in is worth more than the extra upfront cost, for your specific business.

If you’re not sure

If you’ve already got a Wix or Squarespace site and you’re wondering whether it’s actually holding you back, that’s exactly what a free audit is for — a straight answer on what’s working, what isn’t, and whether a rebuild is worth it for you specifically.
